What is Guided Autobiography?

GAB is a method for helping people document their life stories. Guided by a trained instructor, participants are led through themes and priming questions that evoke memories of life events. Each participant writes a two-page story on a life theme each week, brings the story to class and reads it to a small group of receptive classmates. On their journeys of self-discovery, participants feel enlivened by the group experience and gain a greater appreciation of life. GAB can be a powerful catalyst for improved self-esteem, self-confidence and communication within communities and within families. And it can be adapted for multiple venues and populations.                                                            James E. Birren, PhD

Recognized throughout the world, Guided Autobiography (GAB) has been researched and developed over the past 35 years by Dr. James Birren. Dr. Birren is the founding Dean of USC School of Gerontology, author of more than 300 books and articles, long-time researcher, and head of The Birren Center for Autobiography & Life Review.
